Number occurences 17/08/2009

Today, my journey home was 5.5km since I last filled up the petrol, it was 5:55 (on my iPhone), and I parked in spot 55… I often seem to have these odd number repetitions as I go about my days. 911 is an often repeated number too, render times in ae, plates on cars, I tend to look at the time as this particular minute pops around…

Les Paul had a far more profound effect on the course of musical history than other recent “superstar” deaths. The Slash solo on Beat It simply wouldn’t have been without the inventions of this guy.

iPhone tilt shift app 05/07/2009

This technique seems to be really fashionable of late, I first remember seeing it on the Thom Yorke Harrowdown Hill music promo, particularly during the rioting scenes where it reduces the depicted events akin to a lego man battle.
since then there’s a whole community developed on Vimeo and elsewhere exploring the technique. Some people are using proper lenses that create the effect, others are developing ways to cheat the effect in After Effects, Photoshop etc… this was one of the first people on vimeo to start uploading examples.
Now there’s an iPhone application called Vint Shift that creates the effect… it’s free and it works quite well providing you can get up high enough and you’ve got enough light to take a decent quality picture. Here’s two examples I took from the 5th and 12th floor of the building I live in. I wonder if the app will be updated to apply the effect to video once the iPhone 3G s gets more popular.

I was thinking some of the views from the Southern Ridges Walk in Singapore could look good using this app, next time I go for the walk I’ll snap a few.
Unwrapping my MacBook Pro 05/07/2009

So I decided to buy a MacBook Pro and in the tradition of showing the unwraps here’s mine… first of all TNT didn’t knock loud enough so I missed the delivery despite been at home. So I ended up having to go collect it my self from Changi, a 20 minute ride from Tiong Bahru…. oh yeah I ride a motorbike so how am I going to carry it back? I set off hoping my 42 litre box would be sufficient, also packed my laptop rucksack and shock case that I’d already bought. After collecting from TNT I took it back outside and as suspected the 17″ MBP in it’s cardboard box wouldn’t fit…

Doesn't fit...
So I had to do my unwrap in the TNT car park… I left the MBP in it’s plastic tray which fit into the box, resting on top of my laptop rucksack and case mentioned before (thought they might provide a bit of cushioning as I was riding). Folded up the box and shoved it on top (wanted to keep it)… and managed to close the lid.

Unwrap number 1
So 20 minutes later I’m back in Tiong Bahru, I decided to put the main box back together and put the laptop back in to carry it upstairs (could have just carried as it was I guess, but I was still somewhat feeling the effects of a hangover from the night before… was at the headache gone but somewhat clumsy stage)…

Unwrap number 2
So I get to start over, note the massive crease down the box from the earlier episode… oh and yeah I was about to discover I’d started the process upside down….

Ooops
Next there’s a thin plastic wrap sealed with this label…

The rarely read label?
…which states that you should read all the included documentation before starting up the laptop for the first time. I briefly pondered how many people would adhere to this before ripping it off and starting up my new toy…

And finally...
This opening animation is quite cool… anyone know how to view it again just for fun?
Basic tennis etiquette 09/05/2009

Nothing annoys me more than when I’m in the middle of a point, and some mopey f*cktard enters the court and walks through the back during play. One of the first things I was taught in tennis was not how to hold a racket, not footwork or how to generate spin, but basic tennis etiquette such as not entering a court when a point is been played. Yet it happens at least once every time I play on the courts around Singapore…it’s so annoying. I wish the coaches here would just teach the kids some simple manners, and the adults who come to tennis a bit later…you should already know better! Use some common sense…
Behance.net 04/04/2009

It’s in my blogroll; Behance.net is a portfolio/community site showcasing all aspects of design including motion, fashion, typography, photography and everything inbetween. You request to join up and the site administrators deem you worthy or not (I thankfully was worthy), which IMHO is a good thing cos you don’t tend to find any amateur work on there. What’s impressive is the amount of projects that are posted everyday; 324 on 3 April, 2750 in the last week, and all of it solid, inspiring work. There’s also Behance circles, tips, and a jobs section (which sadly is under-represented at the moment)… Behance are also the creators of the Action Method, a series of apps and paper products that elevate productivity… I was sceptical but their tools have definately helped me become more organised.

I came accross Logotournament through a link on Facebook, it’s a website where companies post briefs for their company’s logo, and designers battle it out for the prize money… somewhere between US$250-1000. I guess it’s a good way to generate some cash… if you win that is, potential earnings are obviously hard to calculate. Recommended to keep your hand in at logo design, with the added bonus of pocket money…. you need a paypal account to get paid should you design the winning logo, and software that can output .eps files. You can see what other people are doing whilst the contest is live, current battles can be viewed at http://logotournament.com/. You need to sign up if you plan to enter your designs.
